Research Objective
A PV system was installed at Birg to study the effects of alpine environments on photovoltaic systems. Operating from 1993 until 2023, the system evaluated the reliability and performance of solar modules exposed to extreme weather, high altitudes, and significant snowfall. The research aimed to understand how these challenging alpine conditions impact solar energy systems, with the goal of enhancing the durability and efficiency of PV technology in such environments.

The Bern University of Applied Sciences has operated a PV system at the middle station of the Schilthorn cable car since 1993. It was taken out of operation in 2023 as the cable car was renewed.
